To provide full or partial cost of vision, dental and medical care for children who lack the financial resources, public or private.
Our Mission
To provide funds for full or partial cost of vision, dental or medical care for the children of the Los Angeles Unified School District who lack financial resources public or private.
Our History
In 1956, Kathryn L. Kurka (Kay), Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Nursing Coordinator in East Los Angeles, seeing the great need of students in her schools, started soliciting for funds for underinsured and underpriviledged children to cover the cost for vision, dental and medical care. Kay became the LAUSD Nursing Director in 1978 and continued to solicit funds for underpriviledged children District wide. The Kurka Fund incorporated and became a
501(c3) charity in the 1980's..
The fund was named in Kay's honor when she retired from the District. To this day Kay acts as the honorary Director of the Kathryn L. Kurka Children's Health Fund, Inc.
The Kathryn L. Kurka Children's Health Fund, Inc. is administered by volunteer retired school nurses, volunteer retired school principals and teachers and volunteer community members. Donations provide direct health care services to students with little or no overhead or hidden costs.
Our Operation
In order to participate fully and benefit from the school educational program, students need to see clearly, be free of dental pain and recieve treatment for their medical problems. School nurses working directly with students determine the student's health care needs. A meeting is held with the student's parents to determine their financial eligibility. The school nurse assists the family by referring them to the appropriate resource for care.
When it is determined that the student has no other financial resources the school nurse requests funds from the Kathryn L. Kurka Children's Health Fund, Inc. by calling the LAUSD District Nursing Services. Students and parents are free to choose the health care provider of their choice or accept a referral to one of the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) free or low cost clinics.
The Kathryn L. Kurka Children's Health Fund, Inc. directly pays the health care provider at the time services are provided.
How are we doing?
Raquel stated, "I received my first pair of glasses from the Kurka Children's Health Fund and I have never forgotten it." Raquel currently works for another charitable organization that does not provide health care services. She often has an opportunity to speak about the Kurka fund and how it helped her.
By providing full or partial cost for health care services one child at a time, the Kathryn L. Kurka Children's Health Fund has assisted over 50,000 students.
School nurses will request and obtain approval to utilize Kurka Funds to provide health care services to more than 1,000 students annually.
