Services

The volunteers of the Kathryn L. Kurka Children's Health Fund. Inc. work closely with the Los Angeles Unified School District Nursing Services, District Medical Services and other District Departments to address the health care needs of the underserved and uninsured students of the District.

Direct Donations to Free

and

Low Cost Health Care Providers

In addition to providing health care services to individual students, the Kathryn L. Kurka Children's Health Fund, Inc. provides financial assistance to the 10th District PTSA Vision Clinics and the 31st District PTSA Vision and Dental Clinics who provide free and low cost glasses, vision and dental care to LAUSD students.

Financial assistance or grants are provided to the Los Angeles Unified School Distrct Medical Services and the Los Angeles Unified School District Nursing Services to assist with the procurement and maintanence of equipment and supplies.  This financial assistance helps District School Nurses provide professional assessments in order to identify students needing additional medical care. In addition, financial assistance provided for the District Doctors and School Nurse Practioners helps them to better serve LAUSD students in School Based Clinics.

Life Saving Medications

There may be rare occasions when a student may run out of life saving medications needed for school, such as medications to treat seizures, asthma or diabetes.  The Kathryn L. Kurka Children's Health Fund, Inc. will pay the one time pharmacy costs for the medications until the student can see their regular health care provider to obtain their ongoing prescriptions.

Special Requests

In order to fully participate and benefit from the school educational program, students may need financial assistance other than the cost of direct health care services.  Families may need assistance for such things as transportation costs to obtain services, batteries for hearing aids or repair of equipment such as a wheel chair.  Insured students may lack the funds to pay the required co-payment for their medical appointment or prescription.  School nurses determine the necessity of the special request and request the funds as needed.

A school nurse reports that many of the children at her school could not get glasses without the Kurka Fund.

Many children can not participate and benefit from their educational program because of the pain caused by a severely decayed tooth.
